Hummus is just one of those things that is amazing with a little added spice! Hummus alone is one of the tastiest foods ever but with that extra spice, it just brings out all of the flavour. Sweet chilli, red pepper and Nandos Piri Piri Hummus are my absolute favourites. You can buy Nandos Piri Piri Hummus from most supermarkets and it comes with a little bottle of amazingly tasty chilli oil. It is truly the best hummus in my eyes, or in my mouth.

A healthy lunch or snack

Hummus makes an amazingly delicious and quick lunch or snack. I find it so satisfying and filling. Hummus is largely made up of chickpeas, which are super high in protein making this an excellent source of protein for vegans and vegetarians. Chickpeas are also full of fiber, vitamins and minerals keeping your immune system in check and aiding digestion and overall health. Tasty food CAN be healthy and rich is nutrients.

Peanut butter instead of tahini

Unlike traditional hummus recipes this recipe uses peanut butter rather than tahini. I find peanut butter gives a more intense nutty flavour which goes really well with the spices. Tahini is not always as easy to get hold of too so its more likely you have peanut butter in your cupboard already! But by all means use tahini if you have it.

Make it your own

Hummus is great for tweaking to make it how you like it. Whether you like it smooth or thick add less or more water. Make it more or less spicy with the paprika and chill flakes or switch the chilli oil topping for more extra virgin olive oil.

Hummus is great served with toasted pitta bread, carrot and cucumber sticks.

This recipe is based on Jamie Oliver’s basic hummus recipe.
